Electives
All students in the Lower School Campus have classes in Art, Music, Physical Education, Science, Media, Spanish and Swimming.
The art program provides students with many opportunities for creative expression. Students are encouraged to explore their creative abilities and develop an appreciation for the arts. Additionally, our students explore the great masters through the "Meet the Masters" art curriculum.
Students study music through singing and movement. Additionally, students are introduced to visual comprehension of written music. Students in our upper elementary grades are also exposed to instrumental music in preparation for our middle school band program.
Physical activity is beneficial to both body and mind. Students participate in a program of regular activity that includes physical education and swimming once a week. Students participate in activities designed to develop gross motor skills and coordination while fostering cooperation and good sportsmanship.
Students in Kindergarten through fifth grade use the Full Option Science Service program. The FOSS program materials are designed to meet the challenge of providing meaninful science education. Foss incorporates time-honored methodologies such as hands-on inquiry and interdisciplinary projects with contemporary methodologies such as multi-sensory observation and collaborative learning groups. The FOSS program was guided by recent advances in the understanding of how children think and learn.
Our Media Center is the hub of our school. All classes visit the media center each week. Students enjoy story time, book care, library skills, research skills, keyboarding and library procedures.
The Spanish Program at The Sagemont School is composed of instruction in language, culture and thematic units. Students will learn many aspects of the Spanish language through the use of stories, songs, dance, crafts and games.
Students in preschool through fifth grade participate in swim as a part of our physical education program during the first and third trimesters. The Swim Academy promotes aquatic awareness and water safety by giving each child a foundation of skills that will foster a lifelong love of the water. Our approach is unique in that it is completely "child centered" as opposed to "skill oriented". This means that while the goal for each child is to become "watersafe" and confident in the water, we individualize each lesson to progress at the child's own readiness. This method develops swimmers who are both confident and enthusiastic in the water!
