Mountain Peak, Grades 6 - 12
Mountain Peak Academy
The Mountain Peak Academy (MPA) was created to address the needs of a special community of students in middle school and high school whose abilities surpass their academic achievements due to a learning disability. The children in this program must have average to above-average intelligence with a professionally diagnosed learning disability and minimal behavioral issues. MPA students enjoy the benefit of interacting and studying within the mainstream Sagemont School community of learners while receiving individualized attention and instruction through the classes that the Mountain Peak Academy provides. MPA program teachers work collaboratively with the students’ mainstream teachers to ensure that the professionally prescribed classroom modifications are being provided in all educational settings. Curriculum
The MPA curriculum incorporates time-tested strategies that produce results. Through instruction tailored to meet students’ individual learning needs, this specialized curriculum focuses on the following areas:
- Intensive Language Arts
- Intensive Reading
- Intensive Mathematics
- Resource Room
The MPA program is based on extensive student diagnostic assessment. The results are analyzed, and a program is developed to meet each individual’s needs. The student’s program is reevaluated throughout the year to ensure that he or she is being both remediated and challenged. Students are given ample opportunity to learn, review, and master the materials presented to them. The scope and sequence of the courses is determined by the needs and abilities of each student.
Intensive Language Arts
Intensive Language Arts is designed to provide students with techniques and strategies needed to enhance critical thinking skills and express ideas both orally and in various written forms. The content includes skill-appropriate grammar, usage, and mechanics instruction. Expository reading, note taking, outlining, expository writing, and creative writing are included in the curriculum.
Intensive Reading
The purpose of Intensive Reading is to provide instruction that enables students to develop and strengthen both reading skills and independent reading endurance. The content includes reading fluency and comprehension, critical and higher-order thinking, test taking strategies, literary elements and devices, and reading for meaning using a variety of materials at appropriate independent and instructional levels. Integration of reading with student responses to text and use of high frequency content area vocabulary are included in the curriculum.
Intensive Mathematics
Intensive Math is designed to provide students with techniques and strategies to enhance mathematical calculation and reasoning. The program focuses on developing skills for problem solving, using mathematical language ability, writing within math, and employing test-taking strategies. Through curriculum and instruction tailored to meet individual learning needs, levels, and abilities, Intensive Math is designed to teach students the techniques and strategies that will enhance their mathematical abilities both in school and in life. The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop mathematics skills and concepts through direct instruction, group work, and individualized instruction and practice.
